Fuck Yeah Fashion Design Student
I'm 16, still really young, I know... but I love fashion and I wanted to major in fashion design but I had a few questions and though I would ask you. I'm sorry if you get asked these a lot, but what university would you recommend? Location doesn't matter, but Canada is preferred. Also, what is there that I can do after I finish school? I want to make it big, not work in a boutique you know? Please answer back! Thank you so much <3

16 isn’t all that young!  I’ve wanted to go into fashion since I was 14.

I’m really not the best person to ask about the best colleges; I only really know about schools in New York.  The main schools here are FIT and Parsons.  I go to FIT, which is a state school, and the tuition is much lower— I didn’t even apply to Parsons because of the cost (although I’m sure they have financial aid in some form).  Teaching styles vary: as far as I can tell, FIT is very good with technical skill, while Parsons focuses more on creative development.

I don’t know what part of the country you’re in, but I did see several Canadian schools were on fashionista.com’s list of 50 best fashion schools worldwide:  http://fashionista.com/2010/12/the-top-50-fashion-schools-in-the-world-the-fashionista-ranking/31/

It included Ryerson University and George Brown University in Toronto, as well as Lasalle College International in Montreal.  I would do some research on what’s in your area, look at what the school has to offer, and decide what works for you.

Finally, there’s not really a lot of specific advice I can give you as to how to “make it big.”  You need hard work, luck, and talent.  But, unfortunately, not everyone can be a household name.  There are so many jobs in fashion that aren’t being a famous designer.  My advice would be focus on finding the school that you want, and keep an open mind about different niches in the fashion industry.  Who knows?  You might end up loving a job you didn’t even know existed.

Best of luck!  :)
